Who is Walkalone for?
Walkalone is for anyone. If you carry a mobile phone then you can use Walkalone safety tool; women and girls, men and boys, adults, teenagers and children.
Walkalone was created following the tragic case of Sarah Everard who was kidnapped, raped and murdered by serving Met officer Wayne Couzens as she walked home in south London on 3rd March 2021.
Whilst there was understandable national outrage around the case with strong calls for more action to tackle violence against women, we asked ourselves 'Is there anything we could do to prevent this type of heinous act from ever happening again?'
Our You ID Me system was already sending emergency alerts for medical purposes. Was there a way that service could be altered to help people facing threatening behaviour, bullying, domestic or social abuse, sexual violence, abduction, kidnap and all the other types of grotesque behaviour that humans inflict on each other?
We ran the idea past our 20,000 users of You ID Me and their response was overwhelmingly supportive.

How does Walkalone work?
Walkalone puts a large emergency buton in the centre of your phone screen in case you need urgent help.
Arm the app to have the button active and ready. Hopefully you'll never need to use it but if you need urgent help just tap the 'Send Alert' button. Walkalone sends instant SMS's to your registered contacts, dynamically addressing them and alerting them that the you're in danger and need urgent help. The alert contains a map (or a map link) of your current location. |
How accurate is Walkalone?
Walkalone uses the Google Maps API to provide an accurate snapshot of exactly where the user's mobile device is at the moment they trigger an alert to their emergency contact/s.
Extensive testing of the Walkalone tool has proved it to be highly accurate in revealing the immediate vicinity of the user's mobile device the moment the SMS alert is triggered. There is also a High Efficiency mode to help ensure alerts are always received quickly on the contact's handset. |
